How to Create a Dual Boot Between Windows XP & a Windows 7 Machine

Microsoft Windows 7 is an operating system offered by Microsoft. If you are currently using Windows XP and are unsure whether you want to switch to Windows 7 or if you use programs that do not function properly under Windows 7, you can have both operating systems on the same computer. This is called "dual booting."

      Insert the Windows XP CD and restart the computer. Follow the step-by-step instructions until you get to the screen that asks you choose an installation partition, then press "c" to create a new partition. This partition must be at least 1.5 gigabytes, but should be more. Format the partition to "NTFS." Continue the installation process by following the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to set various features, including your time zone, the administrative password, optional applications, etc. Proceed to Step 2 after completing the installation process.

      Insert the Windows 7 CD and select a "Custom (advanced)" installation when asked "Which type of installation do you want?"

      Continue the installation process by following the on-screen instructions until you get to a screen asking you which partition you would like to install Windows 7 to. Create a new partition by clicking "New." Format this partition to the file system type "NTFS" by following the instructions. After formatting the drive, continue to follow the step-by-step instructions on the screen to complete the Windows 7 installation process. You will be required to set regional settings and an administrative password, and will be given the option of selecting optional applications to install. After completing the installation process, proceed to Step 4.

      Restart the computer. A menu will appear that lists both Windows 7 and XP. You can choose to boot either operating system by highlighting it and pressing "Enter."
