How to Stop MSN Logs From Auto Saving

How to Stop MSN Logs From Auto Saving thumbnail
Saving your chat history on a public computer allows others to see your information.

Instant messaging is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Microsoft's instant messaging client was known as MSN Messenger up until December 2005, when the name was changed to Windows Live Messenger. This messaging client allows users to automatically save history logs of previous conversations. While this is helpful for some users, it may be a nuisance--and even a security risk--for others. Conversation logs shouldn't be kept on a public computer, as others will have access to private information. In these cases, it is important to deselect the auto-save feature of Windows Live Messenger.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up Windows Live Messenger and sign in using your username and password.

    • 2

Click on the "Show Menu" icon, which is located to the right of the search field.

    • 3

Click on "Tools" and then choose "Options" from the pull-down menu.

    • 4

Select "Messages" from the window on the left. Click inside the box labeled "Automatically keep a history of my conversations" to deselect it and remove the check mark. Your chat history logs will no longer be saved.
