How to Make a Shoe to Teach a Child How to Do Shoe Laces
Teaching a child to tie a shoe can be challenging for both the teacher and the student. Using a visual aid that allows the child to see and practice the skill will enable a child to learn more easily and quickly. You could use an old shoe, but if you make a shoe to teach a child how to do shoe laces, the child may be more motivated to learn the skill.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard box
- Pencil
- Markers
- Scissors
- Decorative adhesive paper (optional)
- Hole punch
- Colorful shoelaces

1
Use a cardboard box made from thick and sturdy cardboard. Cut apart the box so you have a flat piece of cardboard with dimensions of at least 12 inches by 18 inches.
-
2
Draw the outline of a shoe onto the cardboard with the pencil. When you are satisfied with the outline, draw over it with the marker.
-
-
3
Cut the shoe out with the scissors, following the outline you made in Step 2.
-
4
Cover the shoe with adhesive paper or decorate the shoe with markers. If you simply decorate the shoe, draw the parts of a shoe to make it look like a real shoe, including the lacing holes, the opening of the shoe, the toe of the shoe and the tongue.
-
5
Use the hole punch to make lacing holes on the shoe. Most athletic shoes have at least five pairs of holes. Make each pair of holes adjacent to each other along the top of the shoe.
-
6
Lace the shoe with the shoelaces in the same fashion as you would lace a real shoe. Make sure the shoelaces you use are long enough to allow ample lacing for tying the shoes (at least 8 to 12 inches).
-
7
Give the shoe to the child and have her sit with the shoe on her lap to show her how to tie using the laces on the cardboard shoe. Do not pull the laces so hard that you rip the cardboard---use care when pulling the laces to tie them.
