How to Change the Power Steering Fluid in a 2005 Honda CRV
Changing the power steering fluid in the 2005 Honda CRV is an essential step in vehicle maintenance. It is also a fundamental necessity in ensuring vehicle safety. A CRV with an inadequate level of power steering fluid or fluid with a heavy amount of debris in it will cause the steering function to respond in a manner not expected by the driver. In some cases, fluid problems will cause steering to become a dangerously cumbersome task. The old fluid should be flushed from the vehicle and new, clean fluid should be replaced.
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the cap of the power steering fluid reservoir, located beneath the hood of the Honda, on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
-
2
Shine a flashlight into the reservoir to see the top line of the fluid in relation to the "full" line on the container.
-
-
3
Disconnect the power steering fluid hose with a flat screwdriver. Unscrew the bolt on the clamp that holds the hose to the power steering fluid pump.
-
4
Place a drip pan beneath the hose to capture the old fluid that will be flushed from the system.
-
5
Start the engine of the CRV and rotate the steering wheel to the left and right. Have another person assist you in replenishing the reservoir while the container is being emptied of old fluid. Continue turning the steering wheel to force the old fluid through the hose.
-
6
Reconnect the fluid hose when the fluid that is being expelled turns from a dark color to a pinkish, clearer hue.
-
7
Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid until the level of fluid reaches the "hot full" line on the container.

Tips & Warnings
Use Honda power steering fluid. Replace the power steering fluid every 3 years or 30,000 miles. If you are without the assistance of another person you can purchase a pump to extract the old fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir.
