How to Write a Funny Resume

A funny resume can help take some of the stress out of job searching.

Writing a resume to help you start your future career is serious business. However, writing a funny resume to be used as a practical joke is not. Professionals don't use humor when describing their career and educational experience on their resumes. But, if you want to get a laugh, you can use humor to lighten up an otherwise stressful job search. You can write the resume for yourself to make your friends laugh, or you can write a funny resume for someone else as a practical joke.
A funny resume could be given as a spoof to someone who is graduating from school, going back to school, or changing careers.

Instructions

1. Start out the resume with a humorous "Objective." This section usually addresses the strengths that the job seeker can bring to the position. A funny objective should include obvious skills or weaknesses instead. An example would be, "Seeking a position as a sales associate where I will contribute strengths in talking, reading, dozing off during important meetings, tardiness, and entertaining fellow employees."

2. Add an "Interests" section to the resume. Include the job seeker's real-life interests, but make sure they're not resume-appropriate. Some examples include "sleeping, eating, partying, playing with my dogs, action movies, and paying way too much for designer clothes."

3. Purposely use incorrect and unflattering words throughout the resume. Some examples include, "My qualifications are detrimental to success," "Planned an event $500 over budget," "Interested in a party-time position," "Always tanked sales calls," and "Received a plague for leadership skills." Just have fun with it!

4. Include a "Special Skills" section on the resume, and make sure the skills you include are either obvious or not appropriate. Obvious skills include "typing on a keyboard, answering phones, pouring coffee, and changing the batteries on my wireless mouse." Inappropriate skills include "pole dancing, eating contests, blackjack, and putting my legs behind my head."

5. Create a new section called "Where I see myself in five years." Base the humor of this section on what you know about the job seeker and where he'd really like to be in five years. Include things like drinking alone in a bar, paying alimony to five ex-wives, wearing shorts to work, and considering going back to school for belly dancing.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure the job seeker has a good sense of humor before you turn his real-life traits into a joke on his funny resume.

• Don't let the job seeker actually send out the funny resume. Make sure she knows it's a practical joke.

• If you're writing the funny resume for yourself, keep it separate from your actual resume, so you don't accidentally send it out.
