So you're getting a tax refund from the federal government in New York. The good news is that since the refund is federal, you can access the IRS' Where's My Refund website tool to check on the status of your federal tax refund no matter where you live. All you need is your Social Security number, the amount of your refund and your filing status, and the website will provide you with information about when your refund will be paid.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain your Social Security number. This should be the Social Security number (or numbers if filing as married) person(s) on the original tax return.

    • 2

Determine the exact whole dollar amount of your refund. This is the amount you submitted on the original return filed with the federal government.

    • 3

Determine your filing status. This is the filing status listed on your original return filed with the federal government.

    • 4

Go to the Federal Tax Return Where's My Refund? website. See Resources for a link. You can get information about your refund 72 hours after filing your return when it has been e-filed and three to four weeks if you mailed the return.

Click "Submit" and you will be provided with the status of your refund which should include an estimated day of arrival, as well as contact information if you have additional questions.
