1
Choose your materials. If you want your rug to be thick and to work up quickly, choose a bulky-weight cotton yarn and a large crochet hook, size US-K or US-L. If you cannot find bulky-weight cotton yarn, choose regular kitchen cotton and hold the strands doubled as you crochet. Crochet a solid rug or hold one strand of each of two different colors together to make a two-tone rug.

2
Determine the shape and size of your rug. For a simple method, crochet an oval-shaped rug. This way, you can work in the round and expand the size of your rug with every round you crochet.

Start your oval rug with a chain of 52 stitches. Make a double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in every chain across; your initial three chains count as one double crochet by themselves. Instead of turning your work, make two more double crochet stitches in the last chain and place a stitch marker in the center stitch of the three stitches in this chain.
Continue around to make a double crochet stitch on the opposite side of your starting chain stitches. Continue in this method until you get back to your original double crochet; make two double crochet stitches in the base of your initial chain-three stitch, then join with a slip stitch to the top of this chain-three stitch. Place a stitch marker in the center stitch of these three stitches. Now you have the base of your crocheted oval.

Continue to crochet around the oval. Chain three to start each round, and make one double crochet stitch in every stitch around. When you get to the stitches that hold the markers, make three stitches and move the marker up to the center of these three stitches.

5
Finish off your rug when the oval reaches the desired size. Join your last stitch to your first stitch with a slip stitch, and then cut the working yarn and fasten off. Use a large-eye blunt needle to weave in your loose ends, and your rug is ready to use.
