1
Soundproof the doors. Since sound waves travel through air, unwanted noise travels into or out of your room through the spaces around windows and doors. To prevent this, measure the gap between the door jamb and the door. Cut a foam strip and make an airtight compression seal. Install a bristle sweep at the bottom of the door.

Plug up empty space around the windows. If the window is never opened, you can fill the space with painter's caulk. The other option is to plug the window with a piece of sheet rock that fits into the frame. This will eliminate unwanted sounds and can easily be removed when you wish to open the window.

Use area rugs and drapes to block sound. Some materials are more resistant to sound than other materials. Fibrous materials absorb sound rather than allowing it to bounce off. An area rug or a carpet on a hardwood floor is much quieter than a bare hardwood floor. Drapes, blankets, and carpets on the wall also work as a sound barrier if you have a tendency to play loud music.

Decorate the room in a sound efficient manner. Choose furniture with rough surfaces which absorb sound better than smooth surfaces. Where you place the furniture in the room makes a difference as well. You can use mass to block sound. Large bookcases or bureaus should be placed against the walls that are shared in common.
