Use the Internet to craft your timeline.

A timeline is a useful organization tool. Through the creation of a timeline, you can organize events and create a visual representation of the passing of time. This helps you easily determine when, in relation to one event, other events occurred. Timelines can be easily created through the use of an online timeline program. This program allows you to easily sort your information and produce a complete timeline.

Create a list of events to include on your timeline. On a sheet of notebook paper, jot down any events that you would like to include on your timeline. Look up the dates of each event if necessary and write the dates next to the events listed.

Number the events in the order in which you would like them to appear on the timeline. Number the listed events from oldest to most recent.

Visit Read, Write, Think to access the Timeline Maker. This interactive tool produces an organized timeline with information that you enter. See the resources section for a link to this tool.

Add identifying information. The first page of the Timeline Maker asks you to title your timeline, add your name and select a unit of measure. Users can select from a timeline organized by date, time, event, entry or other. Add this information and select the unit of measure most appropriate for the timeline you are creating. Hit "Next Entry" to begin adding events.

Add your events in the order that you established in step 2. The Timeline Maker puts the events on the line in the order in which you enter them. For each event, put the date, a title for the event and a brief description of the event. After you enter all of your information for one event, hit "Next Entry" to bring up a blank form for the entry of a new event. Continue adding events until you have filled your timeline.

Re-order your events if necessary. If you reach the end of your timeline creation and realize that you have put an event out of order, you can re-order the event using the edit tab. Click on the edit tab, which sits near the top of the right hand side of the screen. Click "Order" to bring up a list of all of your events. By clicking on the event, you can move the event forward or back on your timeline.

Once you are done with your timeline, print it by clicking "Finished." This will bring up a print menu from which you can select a horizontal or vertical print layout and print your timeline.
