Desktop printers like the Deskjet 3845 by Hewlett Packard are popular choices for both home and business users, but it is important for printer owners to know what to do when something goes wrong. Knowing how to troubleshoot your own printer can save you a lot of money, since professional repair on one of these small printers can be quite costly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the printer and wait for the print cartridges to move to the center. Never try to move the cartridges by hand--doing so could severely damage your HP 3845 printer.

    • 2

Tilt the black ink cartridge slightly forward and lift it out of the printer. Sit the print cartridge on a desk, table or other solid surface with the bottom facing up.

    • 3

Dip a cotton swab in a glass of warm water or a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and carefully wipe away any dried ink or paper dust on the bottom of the print cartridge. Wipe away any excess moisture with a clean dry cloth.

    • 4

Place the black ink cartridge in the warmest spot in the room. Sometimes the ink in a 3845 cartridge can begin to congeal if the room where the printer is located is cold.

    • 5

Allow the print cartridge to warm up for at least half an hour, then place it back in the printer and close the lid. Print a test page to make sure the black cartridge is working properly
