How to Design Your Own Virtual House for Teens

How to Design Your Own Virtual House for Teens thumbnail
Make a house virtually.

Teenagers love designing their own virtual home. It gives them a place to escape from the hectic busy lives they lead. It also gives them the freedom to simulate what it's like to actually own their own home. There are different ways to do this, from video games to actual design software. It's up to you to decide which is right for you. If you like more of a video-game feel, choose a game to design your virtual home. If you want something more realistic, you can just use virtual house-making software. Either way, this project can be a lot of fun.

Try Onverse.com (see Resources). This is a website where teenagers can come and design a home for themselves to live in. They can also visit other people's homes (over the Internet). In a way, the software also acts as a virtual world in which, after designing his house, the teenager can talk with other people logged into the game. The service is free and easy to use.

Find a copy of the Sims. The Sims is also a video game where the player makes a home to live in. The Sims has been around for a while; it originated on the PC and has moved to other video game systems. Different versions of the game (depending on how old your copy is) have different features, but you have plenty of customization choices for your virtual home. The game has won many awards and is a popular choice for teenagers everywhere. After you have your home created, you are responsible for keeping the family happily living in the home. You can move and change homes, too.

Navigate to Google's Sketchup service (see Resources). Google offers a free (and paid) service called SketchUp (and SketchUp Pro). This isn't a game like the previous two options, but is a service for virtual building rendering. You can design what home you like, but there is no game to play afterward. Instead, this service focuses on nothing but designing your home. The free version won't have as many features as the paid version, but it still allows you to design your home.
