How to Become a CIA Field Agent

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is charged with monitoring other countries’ activities to anticipate possible U.S. threats. After completing a training program, CIA agents observe and oversee foreign individuals and groups, based on the CIA’s needs. However, before launching this career, you’ll need to complete the required education and get accepted into the CIA training program.

Instructions

1. Obtain the required education. According to the Central Intelligence Agency, field agents are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree. Majors in international studies, economics and political science are desired. The organization also prefers candidates with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

2. Study a second language in college. Although not required, speaking a second language is strongly desired. Consider studying a second language during your undergraduate program (as a minor) to master this skill.

3. Send a resume to the Central Intelligence Agency. After completing your education, send a resume to the CIA at PO Box 12002, Arlington VA 22209. Make sure to include a cover letter that highlights your college major, GPA, study of a foreign language and why you think you’re a good fit for the CIA field agent position.

4. Take the required exams. After reviewing your application materials, the CIA may contact you for an interview and examinations. A psychological and medical exam is required. Sitting for a polygraph test will also be required. After reviewing the test results and completing an extensive background check, the CIA may contact you (typically within six months).

5. Complete the Professional Trainee Program. If accepted into to the CIA, you’ll be required to complete the professional trainee program, which is located in Washington D.C. After completing this program, you may apply to become a field agent, which would require traveling oversees.

Tips & Warnings

• The CIA doesn’t accept individuals that aren’t U.S. citizens. Your spouse (if you are married) must also be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for the CIA program.

• CIA field agent positions are dangerous. Attending training will give you an opportunity to see if this is the right career choice for you.
