A handcrafted card is the perfect gift accompaniment.

Handmade greeting cards let people know you are thinking of them. The time and energy you put into designing the cards and the cards' inspired artistry will be apparent. The handmade cards, along with a simple greeting inside, will be enough to let your friends and family know that any message you send is meant with the greatest sincerity, whether it is an invitation to a party, a note of congratulations or a simple hello.

Instructions

Figure out what type of art you would like to make on your cards. For a casual card, magazine collage can be a fun method. For a more formal card, floral borders can be a tasteful design. There are hundreds of media. Consider using potato stamps, glitter, calligraphy pens, spatter paint, watercolors, silk screens or stencils.

Decide on a paper type for your cards. This should be appropriate for the kind of art you'll be putting on your cards. For watercolors, choose white watercolor paper. For a black-ink drawing, you can choose any heavy-weight light-colored paper.

Gather your materials together on a large surface. Your materials could be anything from glue and paint to bits of lace and fabric, along with a good supply of your paper of choice and a pair of scissors. All of these materials can be found at thrift stores, junks stores or art supply stores if you don't already have them.

Cut your paper to the correct size. Do this by drawing in pencil a rectangle on your paper twice as long as the envelope you are going to use. This will give you an idea of how much space you have to work with. You can cut out the rectangle and fold it in half now and continue designing on that, or you can leave the paper whole as you create the card and fold it when you are done. This will depend on the medium you are using.

Create several of the same cards at the same time. If you make three or four potato prints while you have the potatoes cut or 10 identical silk-screened cards while the silk screen is covered in paint, you can save the extra cards for a time when you want to send a handmade card but just don't have the time to make one.
