How to Connect to the Internet With Wireless Computers & Devices

A wireless connection allows you to connect to the Internet from anywhere in your home. Many restaurants, stores and libraries provide free wireless access so you can access the Internet while away from home. In order use your computer or other device to connect to a wireless network it must have a wireless card or adapter. Most laptops and netbooks have a wireless card installed when you purchase them. If you want to use a wireless connection inside your home, you must also have a wireless router which can be purchased at electronic stores or large department stores.

      Set up the wireless router according to the manufacturer's instructions. You will have to attach the router to the modem provided by your ISP with an Ethernet (cat 5) cable. If you are connecting to a pre-existing wireless network, such as wireless network provided by a restaurant or your work place, you can skip this Step.

      Install the wireless driver for your wireless card or adapter, if it is not already installed. The wireless driver will be included on the installation medium (CD or DVD) that came with your computer or wireless card.

      Open the network configuration tools for your operating system or device. The network configuration tool on a Windows computer will be found in the "Control Panel." Windows users will click on the "Network Setup Wizard" or "Wireless Network Setup Wizard" icon found in the "Network and Internet" section. Other operating systems and devices will have a similar set up option.

      Provide your network name (ESSID) and password (WEP key) when prompted and answer any additional questions. Click "Apply" to save the changes.

      Test your wireless connection by opening a web browser and typing a web address in the address bar.
