How to Hook Up a Laptop by Dial Up Modem

How to Hook Up a Laptop by Dial Up Modem thumbnail
Use a dial up modem.

Despite having the faster Internet connections available to you, such as DSL, cable and wireless, you can still connect a laptop computer to a dial up modem. However, in order to do so, you must first have a dial-up service provider. Without the service provider, you are simply connecting a phone line into your computer without any actual service (just like connecting a phone line without having phone service).

Instructions

    • 1

Plug a phone line into an available line jack in the wall of your home. Connect the other end of the phone line cable into the "In" port on the back of your dial up modem.

    • 2

Insert a second phone line cable into one of the "Out" ports of the dial up modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the phone-line "In" port on your laptop computer.

    • 3

Launch your dial up Internet provider's software.

    • 4

Click "Connect," and the dial up modem connects to a near-by land line.
