How to Play Air Hockey Games

Air hockey, one of the most commonly found games in arcades and bars, was an idea originally designed in 1969 by Brunswick Billiards. It wasn't until three years later, when Bob Lemieux finally finished the project, that air hockey became available to the public. The fun and easy game was an instant hit, gaining enough popularity to become a legitimate competitive sport. In 1975, the U.S. Air-Hockey Association (USAA) was formed, creating universal rules and promoting nationwide tournaments. The game remains popular, and the USAA sponsors both national and international tournaments.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip a coin to decide who will start the game. You may forego this process and choose to have a faceoff in the center of the table.

    • 2

Pay for the game. You should find the coin slot along one of the table sides. The puck will be released from one of the goal hoppers on either short side of the table.

    • 3

Hit the puck back and forth with the mallet. Your goal is to try and get the puck in your opponent's goal.

    • 4

Defend your own goal with the mallet. Remember to keep the mallet on the hockey table at all times.

    • 5

Be the first player to reach seven points and win the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't slam the puck with the mallet; a gentle touch goes a long way in air hockey.

  • Never stop the puck by putting your mallet on top of it. If you do this, you forfeit control of the puck to your opponent.

  • Never knock the puck off the table. If you do this, you forfeit control of the puck to your opponent.
