How to Change the Ink in an HP 1040 Fax
The Hewlett-Packard 1040 fax machine is a fax machine, copy machine and phone rolled into one piece of equipment. It is a great asset to a home or business office, as you can accept faxes and copy important documents, all from the same machine. With all of its capabilities, you will find that you need to change the ink cartridge after a period of use. Changing the HP 1040 ink cartridge is easy to do, but you need to follow a few steps to make sure you do it properly.

Prepare the new cartridge by removing it from the wrapper, and removing the protective tape.

Press the cartridge access button, which is the first button to the left of the keypad at the top of the HP 1040. This will move the ink carriage to the center, where it can be easily accessed.

Pull the control panel door downward and lay it open.

Lift up on the cover to the ink compartment.

Apply gentle pressure to the ink cartridge and then pull it toward you. When it releases, lift it up out of the ink carriage.

Insert the new ink cartridge into the chamber, with the contact points facing in and the label facing out. Gently press in and down on the cartridge until it snaps into place.

Close the lid to the ink cartridge area, and then close the control panel.

Press the "Start/Enter" button on the HP 1040, which is the large round button on the bottom right side of the control panel. Next, you will have to push either the number "1" or "2" on the keypad.

Press "1" if you inserted a new cartridge, or "2" if you inserted a used cartridge. Your selection will help your fax machine keep track of the ink level in the cartridge. You are now ready to accept faxes again.

Tips & Warnings
It is best to completely empty an ink cartridge completely before replacing it. The ink levels are hard to monitor on used cartridges.
Never touch the metal contact points on a new ink cartridge, as this can affect how well it prints.
