How to Remove the Sash on Anderson Double Hung Windows

Removing the upper and lower sashes of your Anderson double hung windows will require a friend to hold the sashes while you release them from the window. Anderson double hung windows use the wash assistant to aid the removal process. Once you remove the sashes, you can quickly access the inner window jamb to replace the lift shoes or sash balances.       Raise the lower sash three inches from the window sill. The window sill is the bottom of the window frame. Locate the wash assistant tabs on each side of the window frame toward the top. Push the tabs down each window frame jamb until they snap into place between the top of the lower sash and the window frame.

      Grab the top of the lower window sash and pull it into the room. Push the top of the lower sash down until the sash is at a full horizontal angle. Ask a friend to hold the top of the lower sash while you release the sash from the frame.

      Locate the retainer clip that secures the bottom of the lower sash to the inside window frame. Press the side of the retainer clip with a small flathead screwdriver while raising the bottom of the sash two inches above the clip. Repeat for the other side of the lower sash. Pull the lower sash out of the window frame completely.

      Slide the wash assistant tabs back up to the top of the window frame jambs. Lower the top sash until the bottom of the top sash is five inches above the window sill. Grab the right corner of the upper sash with one hand and press in on the vinyl window frame liner with your other hand. Pull the right top corner out of the window frame. Repeat for the left side of the sash.

      Pull the top of the upper sash into the room and ask your helper to hold the sash while you finish removing it from the window frame. Depress the side of the retainer clip between the lower-left corner of the upper sash and the window frame. Raise the corner two inches above the retainer clip. Repeat for the left side and then pull the upper sash out of the window frame.
