Hot and cold water flows into your tub's faucet through separate water lines. The water enters the cartridge and valve, where it mixes together, and the flow and temperature are regulated. In a tub shower combination, the spout has a pull-up diverter knob, which, when engaged, redirects water to the showerhead. A worn tub spout diverter will leak water from the tub spout, reducing the flow to the showerhead. A broken Price Pfister Gold tub spout is easy and inexpensive to replace. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Establish the type of tub spout diverter you have. Look underneath the tub spout for a screw. Remove the set screw with an Allen wrench then slide the tub spout off the connection pipe. If there is no screw, the tub spout is threaded. Unscrew the spout by turning it counterclockwise. Insert a screwdriver into the end of the spout and use the screwdriver handle as leverage to loosen a tub spout that is too tight to turn by hand.

    • 2

Remove old Teflon or plumber's tape from the threads of the connection pipe. Measure from the shower wall to the threaded end of the connection pipe and jot down the measurement. A 6-inch connection pipe uses a spout with female threads located in the nose. A connection pipe that barely extends beyond the shower wall uses a spout with female threads located near the base.

    • 3

Slide the replacement tub spout onto the connection pipe until the base is flush with the shower wall and level. Insert the set screw and tighten using an Allen wrench.

    • 4

Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the connection pipe a few times and smooth down the end of the tape. Screw the spout onto the connection pipe turning clockwise until the spout is hand tight, flush with the shower wall and in the correct position. Be careful not to cross-thread the connection pipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the old tub spout and the measurement with you to the hardware store to help find the correct replacement tub spout. Use a razor knife or putty to scrape off old caulking from the base of the tub spout.

  • Over-tightening the spout can cause damage, cracks or chips to the shower wall.
