Routers can cause problems if not set up properly.

DSL modems don't typically come with the capability to create a network. Because of this, users will set up a DSL modem with a router such as one made by Netgear. The Netgear router can then connect to other PCs and devices, either through a wired ethernet or through a wireless connection, depending on the router type. However, there may be times when the Internet can';t be accessed on your network. Fortunately, these issues can be rectified.

Instructions

    • 1

Power Cycle your modem and router by shutting off the modem, then the Netgear router. Wait 30 seconds, then power on the modem and router in the same order.

    • 2

Open a web browser on your computer and type "192.168.1.1" into the address bar. Log into your modem using your ISP's username and password, then change the settings on your modem to "Bridge mode" or its representative setting. You will need to consult your manual for specific instructions on enabling "Bridge mode." (If you are taken directly to the Netgear router, disregard this step and use Step 3 instead.)

    • 3

Access the Netgear router using the same IP in step 2. Check the "Status" page to see if an IP address has been assigned to the modem (Look in the "IP" setting.) If not, then try power-cycling the system again.

    • 4

Peform a hard reset on the router and modem by pressing the reset button on the back of both devices.

Tips & Warnings

  • If none of the above options work, contact your ISP's technical support.
