Pearl paint is commonly used on custom hot rods.

Pearl paint is a translucent paint that is commonly used on Cadillac, Lexus and other luxury brand cars. Pearl paint is made up of a pearl powder that is mixed into a clear coat. The pearl clear coat is then applied on top of any color base coat. The powder pearl mix is relatively cheap and can be mixed into any clear coat that is made for cars. Instructions

    • 1

Pour a quart of a quality clear coat into a small bucket. If you're painting a small part, only use the necessary amount of clear coat.

    • 2

Add one teaspoon of the pearl powder mix per one quart of clear coat. Adjust this amount for smaller parts using the same ratio of pearl to clear coat.

    • 3

Mix the pearl into the clear coat thoroughly using a paint stir. When the pearl looks like it's evenly mixed in, pour the pearl clear coat into the cup of the spray gun. Apply two to three light coats over a lightly scuffed base coat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray the pearl in very light coats to assure you don't use too much. This can cause the pearl to loose its effect.

  • If too much pearl is added to the clear coat it will run and streak.
