How to Patch an Asphalt Roof

How to Patch an Asphalt Roof thumbnail
Do-it-yourselfers can patch asphalt shingle roofs.

Asphalt shingles are one of the most prevalent types of materials used for roofing. They are relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed on both simple and complex roofing styles. The life expectancy of asphalt shingles, typically 20 to 30 years, is a strong incentive for many homeowners to buy. These roofs, however, often suffer from small cracks and curled shingles that must be patched after years of abuse from the weather. The job is easy with a roof sealant and a caulking gun. Instructions

  1. Cracked Shingles

    • 1

Lift up the cracked shingles with the putty knife.

    • 2

Install the tube of roof sealant in the caulking gun and cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Firmly press the trigger of the caulking gun to release the sealant and place a bead of caulk underneath the crack on the shingle.

    • 4

Press down firmly on the shingle and apply a second bead of sealant on top of the crack.

    • 5

Spread the sealant evenly over the surface of the crack with the putty knife.

    • 6

Collect shingle granules from the rain gutters and pour them on the sealant to cover up the repair. If no granules are in the gutters, you do not need to complete this step as it is for aesthetic purposes only.

    Curled Shingles

    • 7

Lift the edge of the curled shingle with the putty knife.

    • 8

Place a large dab of sealant under the shingle by the corner that is curling.

    • 9

Firmly press down the shingle to bond with the sealant.

    • 10

Wipe any excess sealant that has come under the shingle with a rag.

    • 11

Place a brick on top of the shingle and allow the sealant to dry for 24 hours before removing the brick.
