A BMX wheel and its sprocket.

Because different size sprockets result in different gear ratios, BMX riders are sometimes inspired to remove one sprocket in favor of another. At other times, sprocket replacement may simply be necessary after the sprocket teeth have become so worn that the sprocket no longer meshes effectively with the drive chain. In these cases, the chain will actually skip over the sprocket, causing a sudden loss of pedaling resistance and a nasty surprise for the cyclist.

Instructions

  1. Wheel Removal

    • 1

Use an adjustable wrench to loosen each of the chain tensioner bolts. The chain tensioners are located on either side of the rear axle. Loosening the tensioners will increase the amount of slack in your chain, allowing you to remove the wheel.

    • 2

Unscrew the axle bolts on both ends of the axle using the your adjustable wrench. Remove the bolts, washers and each chain tensioner.

    • 3

Push the wheel forward, away from the chain and out of the bike.

    Sprocket Removal

    • 4

Thread a BMX freewheel removal tool through the opening in the center of the sprocket, and attach an adjustable wrench to the end of the freewheel removal tool. Hold the wrench at about the 10 o'clock position.

    • 5

Attach the chain portion of a chain whip to the teeth of the sprocket. Hold the handle of the chain whip at about the three o'clock position.

    • 6

Push the two handles down toward the ground. You'll feel the sprocket give.

    • 7

Remove the sprocket the remainder of the way using your fingers.
