How to Preserve Ceramic Garden Pots

Ceramic garden pots are more than just a container for plants. Many of them have intricate coloring and designs that turn them into a type of garden artwork. In addition, the larger the ceramic pot, the more costly it is, so gardeners are always looking for ways to make sure the pots last as long as possible. Although garden pots will see their share of rain and temperature extremes, there are ways to preserve them so that they last for many years.

• Varnish
• Paintbrush
• Clear plastic

Instructions

1. Move the ceramic pot to a location that is not under a tree or close to a gravel pathway. Falling tree limbs, even small ones, can crack or chip the ceramic pot. Likewise, gravel can be thrown into the air by lawn mowers or vehicles, causing chips in the pot.

2. Examine the outside of the ceramic pot to ensure that it has a glazing on it. Glazed pots have a slick feel to them, as opposed to the rough feel of unglazed ceramic. If the pot is not glazed, apply two to three layers of clear varnish to the exterior of the pot with a paintbrush. This will help seal out moisture that can eventually may freeze and crack the pot.

3. Wrap the outside of the ceramic pot with four to five layers of clear plastic once nighttime temperatures fall below freezing. This plastic acts as an insulator for the pot against colder temperatures.

4. Move the ceramic pots inside during extremely cold weather to prevent them from cracking. Although most pots can withstand slightly cold temperatures, if the temperature dips below freezing for extended periods of time, the pots may crack. Pots can be stored unstacked in a garage or basement, or can be moved inside the home if they contain plants.
