The Shih Tzu is a small yet intelligent dog from the toy group that usually weighs 10 to 16 pounds. Although Shih Tzus are considered an extremely smart breed, they are also known for their stubbornness, which spills over into potty training. However, with consistency and patience, your Shih Tzu will excel not only at obedience training, but potty training as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire an appropriately-sized crate for your puppy. Let your puppy get used to sleeping in the crate. Take your puppy out of the crate every morning at the same time. Bring him outside to a designated area. Allow him a few minutes to roam around. Give a simple command that establishes potty time. Allow him only two to five minutes to eliminate; however, once he has started doing his business, give him as much time as he needs to finish. Praise him for a job well done if he accomplishes his task, or take him back inside after a few minutes with no praise if he has not.

    • 2

Return your puppy to his crate once back inside. Bring him back outside every 10 minutes and repeat the process if he did not eliminate; allow 45 minutes if he did eliminate. Take him outside every morning, afternoon and evening if you have to leave your puppy alone, but remember to leave him in his crate while you are gone.

    • 3

Repeat this process consistently throughout the day. Feed your Shih Tzu around 10 minutes before bringing him outside to eliminate.

    • 4

Take your puppy out at the same time every morning, afternoon and evening. Be certain not to stray too far from the schedule, as this will throw him off and ruin your progress. Remember always to praise him each and every time he eliminates outside.

    • 5

Remain patient with your Shih Tzu at all times. As with all puppies, Shih Tzus cannot hold their bodily waste for an extended amount of time and will have accidents. Look for body language and cues, such as sniffing, to determine when your puppy needs to go outside.
