Copy a row based on date in Excel.

Microsoft Excel allows you to copy and paste data, such as numbers, formulas and dates from one cell to another. Copying saves you from having to retype the information you need. You can use Excel's fill property to automatically fill in a series of cells with the same data or with data that's based on a pattern. You can choose to repeat a date across multiple cells or set it to display the dates as a calendar.

Instructions

  1. Inserting the Date

    • 1

Open the spreadsheet you're working on in Excel.

    • 2

Insert the date you want to copy into Excel by typing it into a cell (ex., "January 21, 2008"). Then press the "Enter" or "Tab" key.

    • 3

Reformat the date by selecting the cell (containing the date) and clicking on "Format" and "Cells" in the toolbar.

    • 4

Go to the "Number" tab and select the "Date" category. Then choose a format from "Type" and press "OK." The format you chose will be added to that cell.

Copying the Date without Adding a Pattern

    • 5

Copy the date you inserted to other rows in Excel by selecting the first cell containing the date you want to copy.

    • 6

Click on "Edit" and "Copy" from the toolbar (shortcut: "Ctrl+C") to copy the cell, then select the blank rows or columns where the date will be copied.

    • 7

Select "Edit" and "Paste" from the toolbar (shortcut: "Ctrl+V") to paste the date to the other cells.

Copying the Date as a Pattern

    • 8

Click on the lower-right corner of the cell you want to copy (until your mouse turns into a cross).

    • 9

Drag your mouse over the cells you want to fill.

    • 10

Release your mouse. Each cell will reveal a calendar date pattern following the previous cell.

Copying the Date Pattern of Two Cells

    • 11

Type a new date into another cell (next to or below the first date) with the pattern you want Excel to use (ex., "January 28, 2008" for every seven days). Then press the "Enter" or "Tab" key.

    • 12

Select the two cells containing the pattern you want to copy. Then place your mouse on the lower-right corner of the second cell.

    • 13

Drag your mouse over the cells where the pattern will be placed. The pattern you created will fill the cells.
