Painting Glossy Bathroom Panels
When painting a glossy surface the most important part of the process is priming. Glossy paint has a less porous surface, which is why semi-gloss paint is used in bathrooms and kitchens. It is easier to clean, but a little harder to paint over. Priming the glossy panels is the way to go. The primer is specially formulated to adhere to a variety of surfaces and will provide a good base for the top coats. Sanding creates some tooth, and latex paint is easier to use than oil.
Things You'll Need
- 1 to 3-inch bristle brush, depending on panel size
- Latex primer, 1 quart for each 100 square feet to cover
- Latex paint, semi-gloss, 1 quart for each 100 square feet to cover
- 220-grit sandpaper
- Rag
- Mild household cleanser
Instructions

-
1
Clean the panels thoroughly to remove any dirt or grime. Pay special attention to removing any oil or grease. Remove any loose material.
-
2
Prepare surface of panels by sanding with a 220-grit sandpaper. This will create a texture for the primer to hold on to.
-
-
3
Wipe down the panels with a damp rag and allow to dry.
-
4
Apply one coat of primer using your paint brush. Use vertical strokes. Swift, sweeping downward strokes will prevent drips and keep the surface smooth.
-
5
Apply first coat of semi-gloss paint using the same technique you used for applying the primer. Allow about an hour to dry fully, depending on atmospheric conditions.
-
6
Apply a second coat of semi-gloss paint in the same manner as the first. For intense, deep colors, you may need to apply a third coat, as semi-gloss does not hold as much pigment as flat paints.
-
7
Clean brush with soap and water, straighten the bristles and allow to dry standing up.
