How to Wind a Ball of Yarn So Yarn Comes Out From the Inside
You can wind balls of yarn so the yarn pulls from the outside or the inside. A center pull ball offers a number of advantages. It does not roll easily and may be less prone to tangling. You can also work from both the inside and outside of the ball if you are knitting two of something at the same time. While these balls of yarn are typically wound on a mechanical ball winder, you can wind them by hand with a few simple tricks.

1
Remove the knotted ties from the hank of yarn. Separate the end of the yarn. Lay the hank out carefully around the back of a chair or your knees.
-
2
Grasp the nostepinne or cardboard tube near the bottom. Hold the end of the yarn under the palm of your hand so you will not lose the end of your center pull yarn ball.

3
Wind an even layer of yarn from your hand to near the top of the cardboard tube or the notch in the nostepinne.
-
4
Begin winding on the diagonal, changing the angle regularly to achieve a smooth, rounded shape. Wind evenly and rather loosely. Turn the nostepinne to keep your yarn even as the ball you are winding grows. Continue winding around the ball until the hank is completely wound.
-
5
Keep a gentle grasp on the center yarn end as you slide the ball of yarn off of the top end of the nostepinne or cardboard tube. Tuck the yarn label inside the center pull ball if desired.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't have a cardboard tube handy, start by winding yarn around your left hand, using your right hand to manipulate the yarn.
Do not wind yarn too tightly to avoid damaging the fibers.
