Leather breeches were worn in the 1700s and the 1800s by tradesmen and laborers.

Leather breeches were worn in the 1700s and the 1800s by tradesmen and laborers. They were made of leather and typically had no pockets. Belts were worn with money purses, so pockets were not needed. There were several different styles because they were worn all over the world. The best way to make these types of pants is to follow a pattern. When you follow a pattern you will get the style of the pant much easier than you would if you were to try and sew them freestyle. Leather breeches came down to just below the knee and buttoned or had draw strings to fit the leg. The waist was snug and secured with a drawstring or button. The rear area was baggy to allow for movement when traveling and working. The pants around the legs were loose as well to allow freedom of movement. All in all they were functional and comfortable pants to wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the pattern and cut the leather as indicated. Keep in mind that if you want a drawstring, you need to add an extra inch or two of leather at the waistline and at the end of the pants.

    • 2

Sew the seams together with a sewing machine. Make sure you use the proper color thread and a leather needle. Since leather is so thick, it is hard to penetrate with a fabric sewing needle without extreme force. Attempting to do so will probably damage your needles and overheat your sewing machine. If your sewing machine cannot fit the leather needle, you will have to do this by hand.

    • 3

Decide if you want buttons or a drawstring for the area below the knee and the waist. If your sewing machine does not have the button attachment for sewing button holes, use a drawstring.

    • 4

Sew the button holes, again with the leather needle, and attach the button to the opposite side. If you are planning on using a drawstring, proceed to the next step.

    • 5

Fold the leather over to the inside of the pants and secure with pins. Put the strip of cloth or leather that you intend to use for the drawstring inside the fold before securing with pins. This may prove to be difficult. Sew alongside the pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Patterns for leather breeches can be purchased online and at several costume fabric stores. Leather pieces can be purchased online. Choose a leather that is smooth to the touch and will be comfortable to wear. If you cannot find any, or want the breeches to be warm for winter, line them with a dense and warm material like faux fur or velvet.
