Duct Tape Dress Form Instructions
If you find the cost of a ready-made dress form prohibitive, try making your own from duct tape. Although you must put some time into creating an accurate duct tape form, the money you spend on supplies is only a fraction of what you would pay for an already constructed form. In order to create the most accurate dress form, have a friend assist you in the form-making process.
Things You'll Need
- Long t-shirt
- Duct tape (about 2 rolls will be sufficient for most body types)
- Scissors
- Plastic wrap
- Permanent marker
- Wooden coat hanger
- Batting
Instructions

1
Instruct your model to put on undergarments that fit well and wear a long t-shirt over them.
-
2
Wrap duct tape around the model's body, working directly from the roll. Start about mid-thigh and wind the tape horizontally around the body, making sure it creates a snug shell that doesn't compress the model's body.
-
-
3
Wind the tape loosely around the model's waist and let the tape fold in on itself as it molds to the body's shape.
-
4
Cut slits in the t-shirt sleeves; this will help the duct tape to correctly mold around the body.
-
5
Cut shorter strips of duct tape and arrange them over the bust so that they travel outward from the center.
-
6
Cover the neck with a piece of plastic wrap to protect skin from the duct tape and place horizontal lengths of tape below the collar bone to form a neckline.
-
7
Wrap tape over the top of the model's shoulders, beginning at the front of the chest and ending below the shoulder blades, to form armholes.
-
8
Cover the first completed layer of duct tape with a second layer, this time applying the tape vertically. Run lengths of tape from the bottom edge of the first duct tape layer toward the upper edge.
-
9
Cinch the waist in further as you tape over it, and apply more tape over the creases that may appear.
-
10
Apply one more horizontal layer of duct tape, nipping in at the waist one last time.
-
11
Bend the model to the left or right to highlight the waistline and draw around it with a permanent ink marker.
-
12
Cut the form and t-shirt up the center back to remove it from the body. Place your hand between the model's body and the form to prevent cutting the undergarment or the model.
-
13
Slide a wooden clothes hanger into the form, allowing the hook to stick up from the neck. This will allow you to hang the dress form when you are ready to use it.
-
14
Apply tape over the cut in the back and tape over the form's bottom opening and armholes. Leave the neck hole open.
-
15
Fill the form with batting and close the neck opening. Wrap duct tape around the hanger, almost all the way to the hook to secure it in place.
