How to Change an Address for the U.S. Postal Services Online

Traditionally, when you wanted to have mail forwarded to a different address, it meant a trip to the post office. The change could be either temporary or permanent. You may still file a change of address form at your local post office, but it can also be done online. It is quick, easy and secure. It costs you just $1, and you may get coupons that will save on moving expenses. Allow about two weeks for the change of address to take effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the information you need. This includes the date you want the change of address to take effect (and stop, if the change is temporary), plus the old and new addresses. If the move is for a family, you also need everyone's name.

    • 2

Log on to the U.S. Postal Service Mover's Guide page for forwarding mail (see References). You start by indicating whether this is a permanent or a temporary change. Enter the appropriate dates.

    • 3

Enter the new and old mailing addresses. Indicate if this is for an individual, family or business. Note that for a business you must be an authorized representative of the company to change the address.

    • 4

Enter your credit or debit card information. The Postal Service uses this information to verify your identity, so your name and either the old or new address must match what is on the card. You will be charged a $1 processing fee. The Postal Service accepts Visa, Discover, Diners Club, Master Card and American Express.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a credit or debit card, you can still use the online software to complete and print out a change of address form to take to your local post office.
