Swim shorts paired with a tank top.

Two-piece bathing suits can be much more comfortable and convenient that one-piece bathing suits. However, many women feel uncomfortable wearing a bikini and would like a two piece that covers more. Tankinis and boy short bathing suits can be hard to find in stores, but they're not too hard to make from home. With the right tools and materials, any seamstress with moderate skill can make her own tankini with boy shorts. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Lycra fabric
  • Tight-fitting tank top
  • Tight-fitting boxer shorts

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the Lycra fabric in half and lay it on a flat surface. Lay the tank top flat on top of the fabric. Trace around the tank top with a piece of white chalk, adding about 1/2 inch all the way around for the seam allowance.

    • 2

Cut the fabric along the drawn lines, cutting through both layers of fabric so that you end up with two identical pieces.

    • 3

Lay these two pieces of fabric directly on top of each other, right sides together. Insert a stretch needle into the sewing machine.

    • 4

Sew the two fabric pieces together. Sew up the sides, stop at the arm holes, and sew on the top of the straps.

    • 5

Fold over the arm holes and the bottom of the tank 1/2 inch. Sew the folds down, tucking the raw edges under as you go.

    • 6

Place the boxer shorts on top of the Lycra fabric, which should still be folded in half. Trace around the boxers with a white piece of chalk, adding 1/2 inch all the way around for seam allowance.

    • 7

Cut the fabric along the white chalk outline, making sure to cut through both layers of fabric. Place the two resulting fabric pieces directly on top of each other, right sides facing together.

    • 8

Sew the two pieces of fabric together along each side and through the crotch area. Fold over the bottom of the legs 1/2 inch.

    • 9

Sew the folded over edges in place, tucking under the raw edge of the fabric as you go. Fold over the top of the shorts 1 inch.

    • 10

Sew the top fold down, tucking under the raw edge of the fabric under as you go. Leave a 1 inch opening in the hem.

    • 11

Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to wrap around your waist. Thread this elastic piece through the waistband of the shorts, using the 1 inch opening.

    • 12

Sew the two ends of the elastic together and sew the 1 inch opening closed.
