How to Connect a TV & a Separate DVD Player to a Surround Sound System
Connecting a television and DVD player to a surround sound system creates a basic home theater for enjoying movies and music in multi-channel audio. The surround sound receiver is at the heart of the system, managing the connections between different components while processing the audio signals for surround sound in the connected speakers. Hooking up a TV requires a standard RGB video cable to connect with the receiver. A DVD player uses composite AV cables, which typically come with the component or can be purchased at electronics stores.

1
Connect the RGB (red, green and blue) plugs on the video cables to the Video OUT jacks on the surround sound receiver, matching the plugs to the jack colors.

2
Insert the plugs on the other end into the Video IN jacks on the back of the television. If the TV has more than one set of video inputs, make a note of which one is used for the surround sound receiver connection. This completes the connection to the TV.

Tips & Warnings
Since the receiver's surround sound speakers will be used for audio, no audio connection to the TV is necessary. Surround sound speakers in most circumstances will provide superior audio to the TV's built-in speakers.
Unplug all equipment from the power while hooking up AV cables.
