Colored sugars add a sweet touch to cakes, cupcakes and desserts. However, investing in a large variety of colored sugars can cost a pretty penny. If you are in a time crunch, it is not always feasible to head out to the grocery store for a specialty colored sugar. Make your own colored sugar at home. You'll be able to customize your sugar colors by making them lighter or darker, as you wish. Store your creations in shaker jars and keep them in a cool dark place. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Zippered storage bags
  • Granulated sugar
  • Liquid food coloring
  • Sugar
  • Shaker top jar

Instructions

      Add one half cup of sugar to a storage bag.

      Add two drops of liquid food coloring to the storage bag.

      Close the bag by zipping the storage bag. Lay the bag on a flat surface.

      Press and massage the sugar in the bag to distribute the food coloring.

      Add a few more drops of food coloring to the bag if you desire a darker color. Massage the color into the sugar.

      Leave the sugar in the bag and allow it to dry for up to twenty-four hours. Cut the corner of the storage bag with sharp scissors and pour the sugar into a shaker jar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use plastic gloves when working with food dyes. You could stain your skin.
