Exchange server sends email to recipients on the Internet.

Exchange is an email server hosted by small to medium-sized businesses. The server can be set up as a relay server, which means other domains and users on the Internet can use the Exchange server to send email. Normally, this practice is not recommended, but it's a useful tool for web-hosting companies that allow clients to send email from the client domain. Exchange server can be configured as a relay in the system manager.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" and select "All Programs." Click "Microsoft Exchange" and select "System Manager" from the list of menu items.

    • 2

Click the "Connectors" item on the left side of the window. This expands a tree that lists several other options underneath the Connectors icon.

    • 3

Right-click "Internet Mail SMTP Connector" and select "Properties." This opens a new window where you can set the relay settings. Click the "General" tab in this window.

    • 4

Select "Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts" and enter your SMTP server name in the text box displayed. Ensure you enter the fully qualified name, which is typically "smtp.my_domain.com." Replace "my_domain" with the name of your domain.

    • 5

Click the "Advanced" tab and then click the "Outbound Security" button. Select "Anonymous Access" to allow anyone to use the Exchange server as a relay or enter a user name and password. The user name and password are used to give permissions to only those users to whom you give access.

    • 6

Click the "OK" button. Click "OK" again at the main Properties window. The Exchange server is now configured to allow relay email.
