How to Create a LAN With Another Computer Over the Internet
A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a network allowing LAN connections over the Internet.
VPNs can be a secure way for allowing access to files and documents over the Internet.
In the past, setting up a VPN connection required a lot of planning and was complicated often requiring its own server. VPNs can be used at home, at the office or whenever you need access to files and documents on the road. Setting up a VPN can be achieved quickly and easily with just a simple program.

Download Hamachi and install it: (You can find the link in the "Resources" section below.)
You must make an account on the LogMein website. Click on the "network mode"
tab and select "Add Client". Choose the option to "Install LogMein Hamachi on this computer."
Install the software by following the on-screen directions. -

Name your network. When you first load the Hamachi client it asks for a network name; make sure you remember what you named your network or you won't be able to connect.

Add a client to connect to your computer at home or work. Log in to the LogMein website and select the Network mode. Click the link labeled "Deployment." Click on the "Add new link" option. Type in a brief description of your network so that you may easily recognize it. You will also need to select how many connections you wish to allow. Enter in an expiration period to determine how long your link will be available. Now select the network name that you created when you installed your Hamachi client.

Copy the information in the text box in order to email it to yourself or your friend. Now you can open this link on the other computer you will be using to access your files from. Open the link when it arrives in your inbox and proceed to install the Hamachi Client.

Tips & Warnings
Alternatively you may use Windows Live Mesh or OpenVPN to create a VPN connection.
When logging into Hamachi you must be using the same network name in order to share
files.
You can also install Hamachi without needing a LogMein account.
Check with your network administrator if using Hamachi if connecting to your computer at work;
this may not be allowed under their network policy or they may have their own preferred VPN method.
