How to Connect a Wireless Network Router to a Wired VoIP Router

Wireless and VoIP routers work together.

The basic setup for a wireless and voiceover Internet protocol (VoIP) router is straightforward and can be hooked up in a matter of minutes. The routers attach using regular Ethernet cables that look like they have oversized telephone jacks on either end. Each router should come with a cable in the box, so you shouldn't have to buy more. If you do need extras, you can get them at any electronics store or most hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your computer, Internet modem and any router that you are currently operating.

    • 2

Remove power supply cord from the back of the Internet modem and router (again, if you are currently operating one).

    • 3

Run an Ethernet cable from the output Ethernet jack on the Internet modem to an input Ethernet jack on the VoIP router. The jack on the back will be numbered and will not be labeled "Internet."

    • 4

Run an Ethernet cable from the jack labeled "Internet" on the VoIP router to an input jack on the wireless router.

    • 5

Turn on your computer and wait for it to boot up. Plug in the Internet modem, turn it on and allow it to boot up--about one minute (you will see the lights come on one at a time).

    • 6

Plug in the VoIP router, turn it on and give it a minute to boot up completely.

    • 7

Plug in and turn on the wireless router. After a minute, test the VoIP router by checking for a dial tone on your telephone, and test the wireless router by looking for a signal with your computer or a laptop. If you haven't used the wireless router before, you may need to follow the manufacturer's instructions to set up wireless network.
