How to Hook Up a DVD Player to a TV With Instructions thumbnail
Use component AV cables to hook up a DVD player to a TV.

Connecting a DVD player to a television takes only a few minutes using a standard set of component audio-visual cables, with three video plugs and two audio plugs for left and right stereo channels. Most TV sets are equipped with several input jacks for direct connections with different types of equipment. The component jacks on the TV and DVD player consist of RGB video (red, green and blue), and white and red audio. Matching the cable plugs to the jack colors makes the connection fast and simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the red, green and blue video plugs on one end of the component cables into the RGB "Video OUT" jacks on the back of the DVD player. The jacks are color-coded to match the plugs.

    • 2

Connect the RGB plugs on the other end of the cables to a set of "Video IN" jacks on the back of the TV. Most TVs are equipped with several sets of jacks for connecting different components, so make a note of which set is used to connect the DVD player. For example, "Input 1" is the first set of jacks.

    • 3

Insert the white and red audio plugs into the left and right "Audio OUT" jacks on the back of the DVD player. White connects to the left jack and red hooks up to the right jack.

    • 4

Connect the plugs on the other end to the "Audio IN" jacks on the TV, using the same set of AV jacks (Input 1, for instance) that go with the video cables. Input 1 on the TV will then have three video-plug connections and two audio-plug connections.

    • 5

Turn on both components and load a disc in the DVD player. Then close the media tray using the "Open/Close" button on the front of the component or the remote control.

    • 6

Press the "Input" button repeatedly on the TV remote control until the DVD signal appears on screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unplug the TV and DVD player from the power when connecting or disconnecting the component cables.
