How to Make a Laundry Room Bank Craft

How to Make a Laundry Room Bank Craft thumbnail
Piggy banks can be made with bleach bottles.

Piggy banks can be an important tool to teach young children how to save money, and kids will be more apt to save if they have taken an active role in creating their own piggy bank. For this project, search through your laundry room for empty containers. A bleach bottle, for example, can have a second life as a piggy bank. Your child will learn about saving--and recycling--at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the bleach bottle with hot water and dish soap. Let it air dry before you begin working with it.

    • 2

Turn the bleach bottle on its side so the bottle cap is facing you. This is the pig's nose. Use a hot glue gun to attach four round pieces of cork as the pig's feet.

    • 3

Cut a thin rectangle out of the top middle of the bleach bottle. The rectangle only needs to be big enough to fit a quarter, or a folded dollar bill.

    • 4

Cut eyes for the pig out of felt or construction paper. Glue them in place.

    • 5

Cut two round circles out of felt or construction paper to represent the pig's nostrils. Glue them on the bottle cap.

    • 6

Cut long ovals out of construction paper to represent the pig's ears. Fold 1/4 inch of the bottom over so it forms a tab. Use hot glue to stick the tab to the bleach bottle so the rest of the ear sticks up. Do this for both ears.

    • 7

Make some pants or a tutu for the pig using felt or lace. Glue it to the bleach bottle.

    • 8

Twist a pipe cleaner so it spirals and glue one end to the back end of the bleach bottle. This is the pig's tail.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use buttons to make the pig's eyes.

  • If you don't have a bleach bottle, use a laundry detergent bottle.

  • Children should be supervised when using a hot glue gun. If the glue gun is not used properly, a child could get burned.
