How to Convert a Laundry Room to an Office

How to Convert a Laundry Room to an Office thumbnail
It is important to be comfortable in your home office.

Rapid advances in computer technology make it possible for more people to work from home. While in the past only a select few professions held true work-at-home potential, these days everyone from customer service representatives to computer technicians can work from home. Of course, those home workers must have a suitable office. One of the most effective ways to accomplish that goal is to turn an unused or underused space into a fully functional home office. A laundry room is a particularly good candidate for the conversion, since all of the necessary infrastructure is in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the washer, dryer and other items from the room before you begin. Stripping the room down to the walls will make it easier to visualize where each piece of the home office will go.

    • 2

Search for an existing phone jack--it is unlikely that the laundry room has a phone connection. If you do not want to spend the money to install a new phone jack, use a cordless phone with an extension.

    • 3

Examine the existing electrical outlets to be sure they meet your needs. Locating your computer desk near where the washer and dryer were connected will make it easier to convert the room. Using a power strip or UPS will allow you to plug more devices in, while protecting those devices if there's a power surge or electrical outage.

    • 4

Place a quality corner computer desk in the most convenient corner of the room. Using a corner computer desk will make the most of the available space. Plug your power strip or UPS into the wall outlet before you put your desk in place.

    • 5

Move your computer equipment on to the desk and position the equipment so you are comfortable. It is important to adjust the height of the monitor to your liking--this will make it easier to work.

    • 6

Search for any built-in shelving units that could be used to store your files and other work-related items. Many laundry rooms have shelving units built into the walls to hold detergents, fabric softeners, laundry baskets and other necessary items. These shelves can easily be converted into office shelving units.
