How to Monitor Network Hardware
Network hardware, also called networking hardware, is the equipment used to create a computer network. Items include routers, modems, Ethernet switches, hubs, Ethernet cables and Ethernet controllers. In order for you to maintain a smooth connection with other computers and a fast Internet connection, you need to monitor your devices and make sure that they are functioning properly.

1
Check the external modem and make sure that the LED light for "Data" is blinking. If you notice that the connection becomes slower than usual, turn off the modem for at least 30 seconds and then power it on again. This refreshes the modem settings and renews the connection.

2
Ensure a good connection. If you are using a router, hub or Ethernet switch, make sure that it is properly connected to the modem as well as to the other computers in the network. Turn the device off for at least 30 seconds and turn it on again. Just like the modem, these devices need to be rebooted whenever the connection slows down.

Ensure that the Ethernet cables are fully functioning. You should see orange or yellow lights flashing from the Ethernet cable connector when it is plugged to the LAN (Local Area Network) port of your computer. This indicates that your Ethernet controller recognizes the cable.

4
Update your Ethernet controller driver. When the computer fails to recognize the Ethernet controller, it could be that the driver has been corrupted or the device itself is malfunctioning. To update your Ethernet controller, open "Control Panel," "Performance and Maintenance," "System," "Hardware" and then "Device Manager." Expand the menu for "Ethernet Controller" by clicking on the plus sign before it. Right-click on the name of your Ethernet controller and select "Update."

5
Make sure that you have a reputable antivirus software installed on your computer. Aside from your networking hardware, also monitor and maintain the performance of the computers in the network. When the computers slow down, it affects the LAN and Internet speed.

6
Run the "Disk Defragmenter" utility in Windows at least once a week if the computers are used daily. To access this utility, click on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and then select "Disk Defragmenter." Select the drive that you want to defragment and then click "Analyze." After this process is finished, click on "Defragment."
