    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • trash can with lid
    • drill with 7/8 inch bit
    • kitchen scraps
    • paper and cardboard
    • a shovel or rake
      • 1

Find or purchase an outdoor trash can with a lid for use in indoor composting. Use a 7/8 inch bit to drill several holes into the sides of the trash can near the bottom. Drill at least 10 holes at least 3 inches from the bottom.

Locate the container away from doors and high-traffic areas. A dark basement or a closet is ideal for indoor composting. Locate the container close to the kitchen, if space is available.

      • 3

Collect items for indoor composting. Such items include plant-based kitchen scraps, cardboard and untreated paper, including newspaper. "Untreated", in this case, means not shiny or glossy. Good choices for kitchen scraps include potato or orange peels, discarded parts of plants used for eating or cooking (don't try to compost any seeds), and coffee grounds.

      • 4

Add the items to the indoor compost bin until the bin is filled up. Be sure when not using the compost bin to keep the lid securely in place to avoid tipping or pests getting in.

      • 5

Use a shovel or rake to mix the compost once per week. This is one of the keys to indoor composting, as ensuring an even mix will cause the composted materials to break down faster and avoid any foul smells.

      • 6

Use the compost as needed for the garden or plants in containers. As compost is used, be sure to add more materials for indoor composting.
