Find a measurement from a picture.

Oftentimes when you move into your first apartment or home, you don't have all the basic supplies that most homes take for granted. Something that seems as inconsequential as a ruler can present a problem when you need to measure something but don't have one. With a bit of innovation, you can substitute a ruler with other items in your home like a picture. Most people know the measurements of their pictures, so use a picture to find a measurement when you don't have a ruler or measuring tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the size of the side of the picture you are going to use. For example, find a 5-by-7-inch picture, and use the 5-inch side to find a measurement.

    • 2

Measure the object in question by using the side of the picture, such as the 5-inch side of a 5-by-7-inch photo. Line the side of the picture up with the object just as you would a ruler. If the object is longer than the side of the picture, place your finger at the end of the first measurement, and then line the picture up again starting at that point.

    • 3

Multiply the amount of times you had to line the side of the picture up with the object to determine the measurement of the object. For instance, if you lined the 5-inch side of the picture up with the object five times, then your final measurement would be 25 inches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Convert inches to feet by dividing the number of inches by 12.

  • Try to be as precise as possible when moving the picture so that you don't skew the measurement. Use your finger to mark each measurement and continue in a straight line.
