How to Install an RV Rearview Camera

Rearview cameras make traveling safer.

Technology has made traveling with an RV much easier. Instead of the "get out of the car and guide" method, RVers can now use a rearview camera to see what is behind them when backing out. These cameras vary in price depending on the quality, the size of the monitor and unit and whether or not it is colored. Most newer RVs have a system included, but, if you need to install an RV rearview camera, it is easy to do.

Things You'll Need

• Wireless camera kit
• Isotropy alcohol pad
• Drill and bits
• Assorted screwdrivers

Instructions

1. Purchase an RV rearview camera at your local camping or RV supply store. Open the new kit to make sure all the pieces are included.

2. Decide where you want to mount the camera. It should be located near the driver's seat, but make sure it does not get in the way of blind spots when not in use. Place the monitor temporarily where it will be located. Clean the area where the monitor will be mounted with the alcohol pad.

3. Plug the monitor's power cord into a 12-volt outlet or the cigarette lighter (depending on the model). Mount the monitor by drilling holes through the monitor and then screwing it in.

4. Go outside to the rear of the RV. Mount the camera using the license plate bolts.Lay the power cable out to go to the backup light circuit. If a hole is to be drilled, make sure that nothing is behind it and use the rubber grommet. A rubber grommet is a rubber washer.

5. Remove the backup light bulb from its socket and remove the socket. Connect the positive power cable to the positive wire in the backup light circuit, and then connect the negative power cable to the negative wire in the backup light circuit. Replace the bulb in its socket.

6. Return inside the RV. Apply the hand brake, and turn the monitor on. Place the vehicle in reverse and check orientation of the image. Release the hand brake and back up. Adjust the picture quality on the monitor if necessary.
