Patio doors brighten up a room and allow the beauty of the outdoors to shine right into your home. When those serene vistas are tainted by a broken pane of glass or the double-paned glass has lost its seal, it is hard to enjoy them. You may hire professionals to come out and replace the doors. With today's economy many people are unable to afford to have someone come in to do these minor tasks and elect to do them themselves for a break in cost. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Screwdriver
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Utility knife
  • Level
  • Small pry bar
  • Tube of caulking
  • Caulk gun
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

      Pry away the interior trim of the door using the pry bar.

      Unscrew and remove the stile cover. Grip the sliding panel and tip the top in, lifting the bottom out of the track.

      Unscrew the brackets holding the stationary door in place. Use the utility knife to cut away any caulk or paint that may hold the door. Pry the door away from the top and bottom of the frame. Tip it in as with the sliding door and lift out of the track.

      Pry off the exterior trim using the pry bar With the reciprocating saw, cut through the nails between the frame and the framing. Remove the frame from the opening.

      Check that the sill is level. Add a few lines of caulking to the entryway and lift the new frame into place.

      Use a level and shims to center and square off the frame. Once positioned, screw into place.

      Lean the stationary door into the frame and lift into the track. Screw into place any brackets needed to hold it in place. Make any final adjustments to square the frame.

      Lean the sliding door into the frame and lift into the track. Replace the stile cover and screw it in place.

      Set the sliding door slightly ajar and, using a screwdriver, adjust the roller height until the gap between the door jamb and the door is even from top to bottom.

      Replace the trim on the exterior and interior walls.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a partner assist with removal and replacement of doors as they may be too heavy to lift easily.

  • Wear protective eye wear and gloves while working.
