How to Get Wireless Internet From One Building to Another

Extend your wireless signal as many times as you need.

So you need to get your wireless signal from one building to another. Wireless routers are quick and easy to install, but their range is fairly limited. The signal should spread through a few rooms or an entire house, depending on how your building is constructed and laid out, but definitely not from one building to another. The good news is that it's easy to extend your signal as many times as you need to.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless range extenders
  • CAT-6 cable (for installation only)

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your CAT-6 cable into your computer's Ethernet port, and plug the other end into a wireless range extender. Boot up the computer and plug in the extender.

    • 2

Open a Web browser and type in the IP address provided by the manual (192.168.0.1, for example).

    • 3

A setup menu will appear. You will need to tell the extender which one is your wireless network, and, if necessary, type the password. It will ask you what type of encryption your password uses, for example WEP. If you don't know, there are only a few options; try them all until one works, or check your router's manual.

    • 4

Finish the automated setup, then unplug your extender from your computer. Place the extender as far away from your router as you can while still receiving a "good" signal. If you don't know where you are receiving a good signal, walk around with a laptop and check it. Place your extender out of reach and plug it in; it will have retained all the settings from your setup.

    • 5

Locate an area in one of the buildings where you can look out a window and into a window in the other building. Place extenders in each of these windows; this will ensure the best transmission possible between the two extenders.

    • 6

Continue to set up extenders until you achieve the coverage you are looking for. There's no real limit to how many you can have.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your buildings are more than 50 feet apart, it's best to get each its own wireless Internet access. The extenders have a limited range, and atmospheric conditions will affect the signal, especially at longer distances.
