How to Remove an Interior Door Knob
Interior door knobs still perform the basic function of opening, closing and locking doors, but they have slightly evolved from the design of their older counterparts that still dominate many homes throughout America. For this reason, the process of removing a doorknob may differ slightly depending on the type of fixture installed in the door. This is a do-it-yourself task. Inspect the trim of the door knob. This is the flat piece between the door knob and the door. If it has visible screw heads installed, use the correct size Philips screwdriver to back out the screws and remove the trim and the doorknob. Proceed to Step 4. If no screws are visible, proceed to step 2.

Look closely at the shank of the doorknob for a small opening or indentation. Insert the tip of a narrow blade screwdriver into the opening, and push firmly while placing your other hand on the knob and pulling. The knob should come off in your hand.

Place the flat blade of a screwdriver underneath the trim, and pry it away from the door to remove it as there are no screws holding it onto the door.

Inspect the screws that hold the lockset onto the door, and use the appropriate size and type of screwdriver to remove them. Pull the lockset or bolt assembly from the door now that it is free.

Tips & Warnings
If you are replacing the doorknob, you may want to remove the strike plate as well. This is optional. The strike plate is located on the door frame. It covers the hole where the door latches and contains two screws. Remove the screws, and the strike plate will come loose.
