How to Research Italian Ancestry
One of the easiest ways to begin your search is through family members. Talking to older relatives can provide information about your heritage, and also add links and clues to the things still unknown. The Internet can also provide some effective tools, thanks to genealogy websites that give you access to historical family records, as well as other leads to assist you in revealing your Italian ancestry.
Instructions

1
Discuss your intentions with your oldest family members. Many members of older generations will have a stronger memory of previous relatives than younger generations.
-
2
Record any details of the family members discussed. You can use either an audio recording or a detailed written recording. Include any information provided on your Italian relatives, such as birth dates, marriages, or deaths. Ask your relative about any specific locations or places of interest she may remember.
-
-
3
Inquire about any possible relatives you may be unaware of. Asking about towns or villages in Italy can prove quite helpful. Write down the names of anyone who may be related to you, including distant cousins who could potentially provide further information.
-
4
Investigate different locations for records. You will find libraries that have proven records of settlements that may add additional information to your search.
-
5
Ask any family members for old photographs, paperwork or records they may have. If there are any letters written, ask for photocopies of this as well. Many families also have bibles from the 1800s that record birth and death records in them.
-
6
Examine any birth or death certificates closely. They will generally state the names of both parents, giving you further information and leads to some of your Italian ancestry.
-
7
Conduct a search with an online passenger port search, such as EllisIsland.org. These searches can give clues as to who came through specific ports, in which year and how old they were upon arrival. You can also research your Italian heritage online through various family name databases, including FamilySearch.org. Both search sites are completely free to use (See Resources).

Tips & Warnings
Try calling the ministries of any possible cities your ancestors have settled in. Some locations will actually keep records of any historic settlements.
