How to Work a Metal Stretcher

A metal stretcher is a specialized tool that creates an outside curve on a piece of sheet metal. You should not confuse a metal stretcher for a slip roll, as a slip roll can only roll an arch on a flat piece of metal, whereas a metal stretcher can curve sheet metal as well as stretch metal lengthwise. This gives you an advantage when forming sheet metal rings or flashing for curved windows or wall penetrations for round ductwork. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the metal stretcher to ensure that the jaws are clean and properly lubricated. Wipe any noticeable debris from the jaws of the metal stretcher with a clean rag, and use the tool lubricant to lubricate the jaws as specified by the metal stretcher's operating and maintenance manual.

    • 2

Pull the handle of the metal stretcher upward to ensure that the jaws of the metal stretcher are open. If the metal stretcher you are using is foot pedal operated, the jaws of the metal stretcher will remain open unless you push the foot pedal.

    • 3

Insert the leading edge of the sheet metal into the open jaws of the metal stretcher, and pull the handle of the metal stretcher or step on the pedal on foot-operated metal stretchers.

    • 4

Release the jaws of the metal stretcher, slide the metal 1/8 to 1/4 inch, and repeat the process. Take it slowly, as the more patient you are with the process, the better the resulting outside curve on the piece of sheet metal.

    • 5

Clean the jaws of the metal stretcher after you complete the outside curve with a clean rag to remove any debris deposited in the metal stretcher, and lubricate the jaws of the metal stretcher with the tool lubricant, which is not a necessary step, but it will prolong the life of the metal stretcher and set up the tool for the next use.
