How to Seam Berber Carpet

Carpeting is manufactured in widths of either 12 or 15 feet. Not all carpeting is available in 15-foot widths, though, so in some rooms, you will have to create a seam between two pieces of carpet. Plan to have the seam lay in an area where it will be the least visible and in a low-traffic area, if possible. The filler piece will need to be 12 inches wider than the open area so you will have 6 inches of extra carpet to work with on the seam side and the wall side of the filler piece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install the full-sized piece of carpet first so you will know the size of the filler piece that you will need.

    • 2

Measure the width of the filler piece that is needed to finish the installation with a tape measure. Cut the filler piece with a utility knife so it is 12 inches wider than the open space.

    • 3

Lay the filler piece of carpet over the open area so 6 inches of it overlaps the carpet and the other 6 inches folds up the wall.

    • 4

Cut through both pieces of carpet where they overlap at the same time with a carpet seam cutter so the cut edges will meet up exactly. Cut a strip of carpet seaming tape to length with a pair of scissors.

    • 5

Lay the seaming tape underneath the middle of the seam. Plug the carpet seaming iron into a wall outlet and let it heat up. Lay the seaming iron directly onto the seaming tape--not the carpet. The seaming iron will melt and activate the seaming tape glue. Butt the two edges of carpet together as you move the seaming iron down the length of the seam.

    • 6

Roll over the seam with a carpet seam roller to be sure the seam received full adhesion to the seaming tape. Trim the wall side of the filler piece with the seam cutter and tuck the carpet down over the carpet tack strip with a carpet tucking tool.
